The Project:
We further demonstrated our track-record for high quality decorating finishes with the Willmott Dixon landmark teaching building for Kingston University called Town House.
Designed by 2020 RIBA Gold Medal-winning Grafton Architects as a centre for its campus and connection with Kingston-upon-Thames, the 9,403 square metre, six-storey building on Penrhyn Road replaces an outdated, temporary building.
Our team was proud to play a part, providing complete decorating services, including walls, ceilings, woodwork, metalwork and floors, at this prestigious project.
Client: Willmott Dixon
Sector: Education
Region: London
Services: Decorating, Firestopping
The Challenge: High Quality Finish
The decoration of the building included treating vast areas of timber panelling. As this exposed timber would take centre stage in Grafton Architects design, a firestopping solution was required that not only matched untreated and pre-treated timber, but also met strict eco-requirements, and resulted in a high-quality finish.
The Results: Flawless
To enhance the natural beauty of the design scheme’s timber panelling, while also meeting firestopping requirements, a number of measures were taken. Intumescent Envirograf paint was applied to all architectural woodwork and panelling, selected carefully by the Sentinel Contracting team to ensure that untreated and pre-treated timber matched flawlessly. Complete decorating services and firestopping was then delivered to all areas of the new building, including:
In an interview with the Surrey Comet KU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Steven Spier described Town House as “stunning” as it opened its doors to students on Monday (January 6).

In response, Mark Stewart, Director, Sentinel Contracting plc, said, “Town House was an ambitious decoration and firestopping brief – one we fully embraced and delivered to exacting standards. The end result is stunning, and we are proud to have played our part in this stellar Willmott Dixon project. It’s thrilling to know that our decorating solution has helped create an inviting, welcoming environment to be enjoyed by the University, residents and businesses.”
The Sentinel team are pleased to have recently completed decorating works at the £150m K1 Knightsbridge development in London’s most prestigious postcode.
Our firestopping skills will be put to work on this great project at 20 Ropemaker Street which consists of 419,093 sq ft of office space and 11,785 sq ft of ground level retail space.
