Achieving Environmental Goals with Dulux

Sustainability is no longer a “nice to have” – it’s a critical aspect of modern construction projects. Main contractors face increasing pressure to align with environmental goals, whether from clients, legislation, or industry standards. At Sentinel Contracting, we specialise in commercial decorating solutions that deliver high-quality finishes while prioritising sustainability. Working with industry leaders like Dulux, we help contractors meet their sustainability objectives without compromising on performance or aesthetics.

Why Sustainability Is Essential for Main Contractors

1. Industry Push for Net Zero: According to the UN Environment Programme, the construction industry accounts for a staggering 37% of global emissions, making it a key sector in the drive toward Net Zero. Sustainable practices, including eco-conscious decorating, play a vital role in reducing carbon footprints and supporting environmentally responsible construction.

2. Client Expectations: Today’s clients, from developers to corporate tenants, demand environmentally conscious solutions. Main contractors must demonstrate their commitment to sustainability to win projects and satisfy stakeholder expectations.

3. Legislative Drivers: Sustainability regulations, certifications, and frameworks such as BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) are shaping the industry. Sustainable decorating contributes directly to meeting these standards, giving projects a competitive edge.

Dulux and Sustainability: A Trusted Partner in Eco-Friendly Decorating

At Sentinel, we partner with Dulux to offer sustainable decorating solutions that align with the highest environmental standards. Dulux’s dedication to sustainability is evident in their innovative product lines and eco-conscious initiatives:

  • Low-VOC Paints: Dulux’s low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) products minimise air pollution and improve indoor air quality, creating healthier environments for building occupants.
  • Durable Finishes: Long-lasting paints reduce the need for frequent repaints, conserving resources and reducing lifecycle costs for contractors and clients.
  • Recycled and Recyclable Packaging: Dulux’s efforts to minimise waste include innovative packaging solutions that align with circular economy principles, supporting contractors in achieving waste reduction goals. They have even introduced their Takeback Scheme in which they remove empty paint tins (no matter the brand) from construction sites.

How Sentinel Integrates Sustainability into Projects

The Whittington Building

We were engaged by Knight Harwood to provide specialist decorating services for a new five-storey development that replaced two buildings owned by the Worshipful Company of Mercers.

We painted the walls with Dulux Vinyl Matt RAL 9010 and used Dulux Diamond Satinwood RAL 7005 on the lobby doors, and RAL 7035 on the toilet doors.

In the basement, which housed the plant rooms and the cycle store, the plant rooms were sealed with Keim Ecotec, and the walls were painted with Dulux Vinyl Matt.

The Whittington Building achieved a rating of Excellent on the BREEAM code, and an EPC A-rating. Performance against Part L Regulation targets – which measure energy usage and carbon emissions – has improved by 47 per cent, while fresh air ventilation is available throughout this all-electric structure.

The Featherstone Building

We were commissioned by Skanska, which was working for its long-standing customer Derwent London to a sustainability-focused design created by Morris and Company.

The result is a superior, contemporary addition to a perennially bustling corner of the Square Mile where demand for commercial space is always high. The Featherstone Building is a 10-storey structure that replaced the two buildings that previously stood at the corner of City Road and Featherstone Street.

Sentinel is a specialist decorating contractor with extensive expertise, so it was no surprise when our teams rose to that challenge and completed their work on time – and up to our usual high quality of finish.

All the open plan offices on the upper floor levels were finished to a Category A standard. Meanwhile, the affordable office space, and the ground and basement levels, were finished to a Category B standard.

The building achieved its aim of a 100% biodiversity net gain. It was also rated Outstanding on the BREEAM sustainable building certification scale.
