The Cost of Non-Compliance: Fire Safety Legislation

Ensuring compliance with fire safety legislation is not just a legal requirement but crucial for protecting lives, businesses, and reputations. Non-compliance, especially in the area of firestopping, can result in significant financial, legal, and reputational costs. Businesses must understand the full consequences of overlooking fire safety regulations.

The Financial and Legal Risks of Non-Compliance

Businesses that fail to meet fire safety standards face significant risks:

  • Fines and Penalties: Companies can be imposed with unlimited fines.
  • Remediation Costs: Inadequate firestopping can lead to costly rework and disruption to operations.
  • Insurance Risks: Insurers may deny claims or increase premiums for non-compliant buildings.
  • Reputation Damage: Failing to meet fire safety standards can result in negative press, loss of business, and long-term brand damage.

How to Avoid the Costs of Non-Compliance

To protect your business from the risks of non-compliance:

Norfolk House

Norfolk House is a splendid neo-Georgian building in the heart of London’s West End that has a long and fascinating history. Sentinel was invited by Skanska, given our reputation for delivering built-in fire protection solutions, to ensure the new building was fireproofed from top to bottom.

A key part of the project was the installation of Firemac FM Blue fire-resistant walls. This was done to address certain design issues relating to the construction of the firestopping systems in the building’s corridors.

By using FM Blue, we were able to create fireproofed seals that were fully compliant with fire resistance standards. We also upgraded the insulation of the penetrated surfaces using Nullifire FI025 Intuflex insulation wrap. This increased the fire performance of the area concerned.
